Over-programmed by fear

There are times when it’s OK to respond out of fear.

 

For example, if you’re being chased by a grizzly bear, it’s completely appropriate to run fearing for your life.  

 

However, today, most of our fears involve worries about the future that are unlikely to materialize.

The minute we hit even the smallest bump in the journey, we start to imagine scary situations (unsupported by any facts) filled with terrible outcomes.

You’ve undoubtedly had a bad experience with your largest client/boss/etc. and moments later you’ve convinced yourself that your financial future is in tatters.

One of my mentors, Dr. Greg Sipes, recently reminded me that our animal brain is wired to worry, obsessed with controlling every situation.

When this happens, which it will, he challenged me to remember the definition of the Hebrew greeting shalom – “There is harmony and wholeness in all times and in all ways.”

In other words, take the advice of Paul McCartney and “let it be.”
