Lessons of Mortality

It’s humbling to remember that we all die, yet some of life’s deepest joys become available when we have the courage to face that truth.

Spoiler alert… Life ends.

It is finite. It doesn’t go on forever.

Because of this truth, our responsibility is to be intentional about the gift of every day we’re given.

I’m good at this about 60% of the time.

Unfortunately, I tend to whine more than I should and spend too much time worrying about trivial nonsense.

Which means that like you, I’m a flawed human.

Recently (December 2025), one of my favorite authors, Ben Sasse, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given less than 6 months to live.

Since then (when he’s been feeling well enough), he’s been conducting interviews with a variety of journalists.

I’ve listened to a bunch of them.

He understands better than anyone the gift a day brings and has been gracious enough to share some of his wisdom with the rest of us.

Go find one of his interviews (60 Minutes was amazing) and take the time to listen/watch.

His approach to life/death is a sound reminder about what matters most and how we should spend the gift of our remaining days.
