The In-Between Place

Overachievers teach themselves that with enough effort, they can achieve certainty. Sound familiar?

Ambiguity is a tricky place to sit.

We humans believe that with enough effort, analysis, spreadsheets, and ChatGPT, we can achieve absolute certainty.

This belief leads to most of the angst we feel in our lives.

The truth is that life has been and will always be unpredictable, regardless of our efforts.

There’s always going to be a gap between what we expect and what life delivers.

Our ability to get comfortable with and sit in this gap will go a long way toward determining our level of satisfaction each day.

I’m not suggesting we enjoy the uncertainty, which can be extremely uncomfortable at times.

I’m challenging us all to patiently accept what is here instead of trying to force change.

“True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears, but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so wants nothing.” Seneca
