If you fell behind, who would notice? No, really. Answer that.
It turns out that 97.5% (made-up statistic) of the professionals I’ve met over the years don’t regularly take the time to slow down and appreciate their accomplishments.
They’re just like you and me – checking the achievement/recognition box and then moving on to bigger and better goals, saying to themselves, “I can’t spend all day relishing my environment or I’ll fall behind all my fellow overachievers.”
There are two responses to this argument:
- There’s zero evidence to indicate that enjoying the journey will result in you getting trampled while the other overachievers crawl over your loafing body to reach the next professional plateau.
- Who really cares if you do fall a little behind? Actually answer that. Who would notice? I bet the list is very short. And are the people on it people you actually admire? Probably not.
Take time to enjoy your journey.
After all, isn’t that the whole point of all the hard work?
