Negativity in the workplace

Are toxic situations and people impacting your mental well-being?

Almost 17 years ago, I accidentally participated in an interesting social experiment.

I had recently left my job (software company, sales) and started a business in my basement.

I went from working in a toxic environment filled with negative people (including myself) and instead spent my days with a newborn and my wife, Nicole.

After about 6 weeks, I decided to go back and visit my friends. We all shared old stories and had a lot of laughs.

When I got in my car to leave, I noticed that my chest felt tight and I had a pit in my stomach. This feeling didn’t go away for several hours.

A few days later, I had an epiphany…

Since leaving my job, my body had adjusted to no longer complaining all day long. Just a couple of hours in the old environment, filled with negative conversations (which I probably led) had shaken my system so much that it made me feel sick.

We are a product of the people we spend the most time with each day.

Choose to be around people who focus on what’s going right in the world.
